Bungie has credited an independent artist Antireal in Marathon after their work was previously found in the game’s assets without authorization.
The artist now appears in Marathon‘s credits with what players describe as an “Art Direction Consultant” role. The credit marks a tangible outcome to a controversy that emerged when the creator’s distinctive graphic designs were identified inside the game without permission.
The original situation involved more than just stylistic similarity. The artist’s work had been directly incorporated into Marathon as usable in-game assets, appearing in the game’s environments. This made the situation notably different from typical “inspiration” disputes in the industry.
Bungie previously acknowledged the issue and stated it was working to resolve it. The exact terms of any settlement remain undisclosed, though the artist indicated earlier that the matter had been addressed.
The consulting credit likely serves as part of the resolution rather than reflecting ongoing involvement in Marathon‘s development. Such credits often function as negotiated remedies in creative disputes, providing formal recognition alongside any financial compensation.
Some have suggested the unauthorized use stemmed from a specific contractor who no longer works at Bungie. However, the full details of what happened internally and how the assets entered the pipeline haven’t been publicly confirmed by the studio.
Marathon is Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter and reboot of its classic sci-fi franchise. As a Sony-owned studio working on a high-profile multiplayer project, art asset controversies carry particular scrutiny.
