Bungie has rolled out a unique way for Destiny 2 fans to get their hands on some new gear—they have to prove themselves tough enough in-game before being allowed to spend real money. The developer just released a new weapon ornament connected to the super-tough Trials of Osiris PvP mode, but you can only buy it after you pull off some impressive victories.
Normally, you grab cosmetic items by either playing the game or simply buying them straight from the in-game store. But for this ornament, you’re facing a two-step process. First up, you need a flawless run in Trials of Osiris—pretty much one of Destiny 2’s hardest PvP challenges. Even after you manage that, you won’t get the ornament as a prize. Instead, you unlock the chance to buy it with real cash from the Eververse store.
This is a real change in Bungie’s approach to digital goodies. Before, players who conquered tough content got exclusive items without paying extra, or anyone could buy cosmetics if they wanted. The new “win-to-pay” idea mashes both together, making sure only skilled players can access the ornament—if they’re okay with dropping some real money.
Bungie has done something like this before, but usually for physical loot. Finish a raid or a tough mission, and you could unlock the right to buy real-world gear like jackets or t-shirts. But those items have production costs, while digital stuff like weapon ornaments doesn’t cost Bungie extra to create.
The ornament should hit the Eververse store for Bright Dust (the in-game currency you can earn) down the line. But for now, even players who’ve proved themselves still have to shell out real cash if they want it right away.
