Sandfall Interactive announced that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold five million copies worldwide. To celebrate the milestone, the French studio revealed plans for a substantial content update arriving “in the coming months.”
The update will introduce a new playable environment complete with fresh enemies and secrets. Late-game boss battles designed for experienced players are also on the way, alongside new costumes for every party member.
Language support is getting a major expansion too. Eight new localizations are being added—Czech, Ukrainian, Latin American Spanish, Turkish, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indonesian—bringing the total to 19 supported languages. The studio teased “more to come” but hasn’t shared specifics on pricing or an exact release date.
For those unfamiliar, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a turn-based RPG from Montpellier-based Sandfall Interactive. The game features timing-based combat mechanics and a striking painterly art style mixing monochrome with bursts of color. Its premise centers on stopping a mystical Paintress who condemns everyone of a certain age to death each year by writing their number.
The game launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. Selling five million copies despite being included in a subscription service marks an impressive achievement for a new IP from an independent studio.
What comes next for Sandfall
Studio founder Guillaume Broche told PCGamesN that Sandfall is already exploring “the next real game” within the Clair Obscur universe. The team plans to stay small and maintain its art-driven creative approach.
The developer hasn’t confirmed whether the upcoming update will be free, though the “thank you” framing suggests it could be. Players have already spotted blocked-off sections and unopened doors in the game’s challenge towers, leading to speculation about where the new area might fit into the existing world.
