Fire crews and police responded to what happened at the studio’s building in Edinburgh, Scotland. According to reports from The Herald, the explosion was believed to have occurred in a boiler room.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service dispatched three fire appliances and specialist resources to the scene. Firefighters worked to secure potential structural damage at the commercial building.
Police established a cordon around the property after what happened. The response followed standard emergency protocols for explosion reports in commercial buildings.
Rockstar North is the Edinburgh-based studio behind the Grand Theft Auto series. The developer has been a core part of Rockstar Games’ operation for years and handles development on the company’s flagship franchise.
Fire crews reportedly left the scene at 9:21am after completing their assessment. The building was secured and the cordon was lifted following the emergency response.
What caused it
Boiler explosions in commercial buildings typically result from pressure failures, pump malfunctions, or component breakdowns. Modern systems include safety shutoffs designed to prevent such incidents, though failures can still occur.
It’s now been confirmed by a statement from a Rockstar spokesperson: “Early Monday morning, there was a malfunction in one of the heating boilers at Rockstar North. Many thanks to those that reached out with concern, and also to the police and fire crews who were on scene quickly to assess the situation – please know that everyone is well and our studio remains open and operational.”
