CyberConnect2 has revealed .hack//ZERO, a new action RPG that marks a major shift for the long-dormant franchise. The studio dropped a teaser trailer and launched an official website confirming the game is coming to consoles and PC.
The big news is who’s publishing it. Every .hack game up until now was developed by CyberConnect2 but published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. This time CC2 is handling everything in-house with Bandai Namco’s permission.
The official website describes .hack//ZERO as a “completely new RPG” that keeps the series’ signature mix of virtual game world and real-world consequences while updating everything for modern audiences. It’s designed for both longtime fans and newcomers.
The game is a fresh start rather than a continuation. Despite sharing a name with an older .hack novel, the new title has no connection to that work. CC2 is positioning this as a “start from zero” reboot.
World-renowned violinist and composer Taro Hakase is handling the music. The teaser trailer features violin melodies throughout and includes visual callbacks to classic .hack imagery and sound effects that fans recognized immediately.
The timing matters because .hack has been mostly quiet for years. The last new entry was nearly two decades ago if you don’t count .hack//G.U. Last Recode, the 2017 remaster collection that brought the PS2-era trilogy to modern platforms.
The original .hack games were PS2 titles that simulated playing an MMO while weaving in real-world drama through emails, forums, and news posts. The franchise built a cult following for its ahead-of-its-time approach to virtual world storytelling.
CyberConnect2 is known for stylized presentation and cinematic storytelling across both licensed anime games like the Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series and original projects. The shift to self-publishing suggests the studio wants more direct control over this revival.
