TL;DR
  • Digital Foundry has split from IGN Entertainment thanks to a buyout led by founder Richard Leadbetter.
  • The tech analysis crew will rely on Patreon and YouTube for funding while keeping their content and team the same.
  • DF is looking to hire another PC analyst as they take on more creative freedom—and more financial risk—now that they’re independent.

Digital Foundry, the renowned video game technology analysis outlet known for its deep dives into frame rates and visual fidelity, has officially separated from IGN Entertainment. The split gives DF complete independence as a self-owned entity following a buyout led by founder Richard Leadbetter.

The move comes just over a year after IGN acquired the Gamer Network in May 2024, which included Digital Foundry, Eurogamer, and several other gaming publications. From what we know, ownership of the newly independent company will be split between Richard Leadbetter and his spouse, Esther Leadbetter.

“We’re going fully independent,” Leadbetter announced. The tech analysis team plans to keep making their usual style of videos, and will mostly rely on Patreon supporters and YouTube revenue to keep things running. So far, those sources seem to be enough to support them on their own.

Even though they’re now going it alone, Digital Foundry has made it clear that fans don’t have to worry about big changes in their videos or staff. The main group of analysts and production folks are sticking around, continuing to deliver the in-depth technical reviews and side-by-side comparisons that fans have followed since 2004.

Hiring another analyst is one of their top priorities, especially with the rising demands of PC game coverage. The complexity of PC gaming these days has made things a lot busier for the current team.
