Games journalist Stephen Totilo reported that Disney and Lucasfilm Games had active plans for a full remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II as of March 2024. The project would be a ground-up remake rather than a simple port or remaster.
The most significant detail is the intent to reincorporate cut content from Obsidian Entertainment’s original 2004 release. KOTOR II is famously unfinished, having been rushed to market with entire questlines, character arcs, and even a droid planet left on the cutting room floor.
Totilo’s report clarifies the KOTOR I remake is still in development at Mad Head Games and Saber Interactive. The project originally started at Aspyr Media following its 2021 announcement but transferred studios after reported quality concerns from Sony and Lucasfilm.
KOTOR II has gained a cult following over nearly two decades despite its unfinished state. The game’s philosophical take on the Force and morally complex writing stand out even among Star Wars media. Fans have spent years creating restoration mods like The Sith Lords Restored Content Mod to patch in unused dialogue and scenes from the game files.
An official remake with professional resources behind the restored content would be significant. It would finally deliver the version of KOTOR II that Obsidian never had time to complete under the original 2004 deadline.
The original KOTOR released in 2003 by BioWare is considered one of the greatest Star Wars games ever made. Its sequel by Obsidian took a darker and more deconstructive approach to Jedi philosophy but was hampered by technical issues and the rushed ending.
KOTOR II’s remake is still an idea
The key word in Totilo’s reporting is “planning.” This suggests Disney and Lucasfilm have discussed or outlined a KOTOR II remake internally but full production likely hasn’t started. Given the KOTOR I remake’s troubled development and lack of release date, any sequel project remains years away at minimum.
Whether this KOTOR II remake moves forward depends entirely on the success of the first remake. Mad Head Games and Saber Interactive need to deliver a finished KOTOR I before Disney commits major resources to a sequel project.
