McMillen dropped hard numbers on the game’s scope. Mewgenics features over 10 classes, 1,200 abilities, 950 items, hundreds of mutations, and 15 chapters. Once players start multiclassing, he says it gets “insane.”

The game is set to launch on February 10, 2026. McMillen repeatedly referenced that date when asked about late-game content and events. The team is keeping everything beyond Act 1 under wraps for now, though they’ve already shown some desert areas.

There will be no demo. McMillen said building a proper demo would cost one to two months of development time. He believes a single full gameplay video sells the game better than any demo could.

The breeding system drives the entire experience. Players manage a household of cats and breed them to pass down traits, abilities, and mutations across generations. Meta-progression revolves around planning builds over multiple runs and saving items for future bloodlines.

Mutations work on multiple levels. Common mutations change stats while rare ones act as mini-passives. Webbed toes let cats swim. Horns grant thorns damage. Bat ears reveal invisible things.

Classes split into basic starters and advanced options that break established rules. McMillen confirmed player-favorite archetypes like necromancer, poison builds, and druid-style classes are all represented. Many classes remain unshown.

Steam Deck verification is confirmed. The game runs well on handheld and seems built for chunked play sessions between the home base and tactical combat segments.

Switch 2 sits at the top of the console list. McMillen can’t give a 100% confirmation yet but said he’s “pretty sure it will happen.” A Mac version is unlikely since Apple isn’t making development “easy or worth it” outside iOS.

From cat hoarder to fatherhood metaphor

The game started as a joke about McMillen’s wife mail-ordering exotic and hairless cats. The original prototype centered on a hoarder house filled with cats you’d use as avatars in minigames. The project got canceled and sat dormant for years.

By 2019, with two kids and fewer cats at home, the focus shifted entirely. McMillen now pulls from his experience as a father, thinking about genes passed to his children, inherited curses, and the legacy he’ll leave behind. The breeding system became about parenthood and inheritance rather than just cat collection.
