Gen.G Esports has become the first team globally to qualify for the 2025 League of Legends World Championship thanks to a run of competitive dominance. The Korean squad locked in their spot after clinching a playoff berth in the LCK Summer Split, marking one of the earliest Worlds qualifications in League history.
The super early qualification is all down to Gen.G’s outstanding performance throughout 2025. After taking home the Mid-Season Invitational title earlier this year, Gen.G earned a shot at Worlds—but on the condition they made it to at least the playoffs stage in the LCK Summer Split.
That requirement was quickly met when Gen.G took down Hanwha Life Esports, securing their playoff place and punching their ticket to Worlds 2025. Their Spring Split win, MSI championship, and run in the Summer Split all combined for this rare early lock-in.
“That’s one of the earliest qualifications I’ve ever seen,” many fans said, showing just how unusual it is to qualify for Worlds this far ahead of the main event.
The way Gen.G qualified so early is due to rules set up in 2023, when Riot Games created a system that gives MSI winners an automatic Worlds spot if they also make their regional Summer Split playoffs. This was meant to make MSI mean more, but still keep teams fighting at a high level all year.
Gen.G has looked unbeatable in 2025. The team keeps coming out on top against rivals in the LCK, which is often called the toughest regional league in pro League of Legends. Their MSI trophy proves they’re among the favorites looking ahead to Worlds.
For those out of the loop, the League of Legends World Championship is where the best squads on the planet clash, with teams from Korea’s LCK, China’s LPL, Europe’s LEC, and North America’s LCS all competing for millions in prize money and global bragging rights.
The Chovy factor
With their Worlds ticket punched, Gen.G isn’t easing up. They’re still led by mid lane superstar Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon and will keep battling in the Summer Split, looking to stay sharp and on top of any new strategies before Worlds 2025.
Qualifying early doesn’t guarantee them the best possible seed at Worlds, so there’s plenty left to fight for in remaining matches. But Gen.G does now have the option to try out new strategies or rest players if they want, without worrying about missing out on qualification.
