The community-run wiki cited two main reasons for leaving. First, Fandom’s heavy advertising made the site nearly unusable even with ad blockers. Second, Fandom’s content restrictions created problems for documenting a mature-rated franchise like Grand Theft Auto.
The content issue proved particularly frustrating. GTA games include explicit dialogue with slurs and strong language that’s integral to missions and character interactions. Fandom’s platform-wide moderation policies made it difficult to fully transcribe this content, even though it’s directly from the source.
The new gta.wiki domain came from GTANet, one of the largest GTA fan sites that also operates GTAForums. This partnership gives the wiki long-term backing and a memorable URL.
The old Fandom-hosted wiki remains online. Fandom never deletes abandoned wikis, so both versions will exist simultaneously. The old site will likely continue appearing in search results due to its age and established SEO advantage.
