Indie developer Minskworks pushed a patch for its upcoming Steam game Honcho that adds “Mr Tofu” as a playable option. The sentient block of tofu obscures the game’s female protagonist for players who wanted a male character instead.
Developer Greg Pryjmachuk made the addition after seeing repeated requests across Steam forums, YouTube, Discord, and X. One player specifically said they weren’t a fan of playing as a female character because it “kind of ruins my immersion.”
The tofu mode hides the player character’s body entirely. Players can also toggle off hands for an even more neutral presentation.
Pryjmachuk explained why he couldn’t just add a full male character option. The game is “funded by hopes and dreams,” making it unlikely he’ll have the resources for a fully rigged male character with unique outfits and story beats. He called Mr Tofu a “reasonable compromise.”
Creating a second playable character in 3D games requires far more work than swapping models. Developers need separate character rigs, refitted clothing for every outfit, adjusted cutscenes, and extensive quality assurance testing. For small teams, that workload can effectively double character-related development time.
Honcho isn’t fully released yet. Players have accessed the game through demos and playtest builds distributed to supporters.
Minskworks previously developed Jalopy and Landlord’s Super. The studio continues working toward Honcho‘s eventual Steam release with its current feature set intact—female protagonist and tofu block included.
