Humble Store has relisted the controversial horror game Horses after temporarily pulling it for internal review. The indie title from Italian studio Santa Ragione is now back on sale following a brief absence that came amid wider scrutiny of its disturbing subject matter.
The delisting happened after Horses drew attention for being rejected by Steam and removed from Epic Games Store just before launch. Humble pulled the game as a precautionary measure while its team reviewed the content, then decided to restore it after completing that assessment.
Horses is a psychological horror game where humans are stripped naked, forced to wear horse masks, and treated as livestock. The game explores themes of slavery, abuse, and puritanical hypocrisy through deliberately unsettling imagery. GOG lists warnings for physical violence, torture, sexual assault, suicide, and misogyny.
Steam permanently banned the game during development over a specific scene. The original build showed a clothed 16-year-old girl riding on the shoulders of a naked adult woman wearing a horse mask. Valve stated this violated its policy against content depicting sexual conduct involving minors.
Santa Ragione removed the scene and changed the character to an adult model. But Steam has a policy against re-evaluating rejected games, so Horses remains barred from the platform despite the changes.
Epic Games Store pulled the game one day before its scheduled launch for different reasons. The title initially received PEGI 18 and ESRB Mature ratings, but Epic informed the developers that the full questionnaire resulted in an Adults Only classification. Epic’s policy forbids AO-rated games except those receiving the rating for crypto or gambling features.
Horses is currently available on Humble Store and GOG with explicit content warnings.
