iDubbbz has revealed he deliberately ignored messages asking him to support legislation against child marriage. The reason? He was mad at the person who asked.
During a recent livestream, the YouTuber explained that his former boxing coach Michael Briggs and his wife Kate from Bonafide Boxing reached out asking him to publicly support a state bill aimed at ending child marriage. A simple retweet would have helped raise awareness for the cause. Instead, iDubbbz chose silence.
The cold shoulder wasn’t about the bill itself. iDubbbz admitted he was angry because the coach, Michael, had recently asked him to be a guarantor for a loan to open a boxing gym. For those unfamiliar with financial terms, being a guarantor means you promise to pay someone else’s debt if they can’t. It’s a huge financial risk that can destroy your credit if things go wrong.
“I was mad. I was offended,” iDubbbz said during the stream. He felt the guarantor request was inappropriate and out of bounds, especially given his financial situation at the time.
The timing was rough. This all happened shortly after Creator Clash 2 in April 2023, where iDubbbz lost his main event fight against Alex Wassabi. The charity boxing event he co-founded ended up losing money instead of making it. He was dealing with financial losses, a bruised ego from his defeat, and now his coach wanted him to risk even more money.
So when Kate’s messages arrived asking for help promoting the anti-child marriage bill, iDubbbz simply didn’t respond. He made it clear his silence had nothing to do with opposing the legislation. He just couldn’t separate his anger at the couple from a simple request to help a good cause.
The admission has drawn criticism online. Many viewers pointed out that retweeting support for ending child marriage takes zero effort and costs nothing. Being upset about a loan request seems like a petty reason to ignore such an important cause.
Others defended his right to refuse the guarantor request while still calling his response to the bill request childish. As one commenter noted, he could have just said no to the loan instead of holding a grudge that affected an unrelated charitable cause.
