Jeff Kaplan has revealed the moment that ended his career at Blizzard. In a recent interview, the former Overwatch game director said a Blizzard CFO called him into an office and delivered an ultimatum that would ultimately push him out the door.

“What ultimately broke me and my Blizzard career was I got called into the CFO’s office,” Kaplan said. The executive told him that if Overwatch didn’t hit a specific revenue target, “we’re going to lay off 1,000 people, and that’s going to be on you.”

Kaplan described the exchange as “the biggest fuck you moment” of his career. He said it felt surreal to be put in that position. The CFO who made the threat is no longer at Blizzard.

The revelation sheds light on the business pressures facing Overwatch during Kaplan’s final years at the company. While the game launched in 2016 to massive critical and commercial success, internal expectations apparently demanded even more. Blizzard had bet heavily on Overwatch as a long-term platform, investing in the Overwatch League esports initiative and positioning the franchise for sustained growth.

Kaplan joined Blizzard in the early 2000s and became a key figure on World of Warcraft before leading Overwatch. He spent years as the public face of the team, delivering regular developer updates that made him one of gaming’s most recognizable directors.

He left Blizzard in April 2021 without detailed public explanation. At the time, Blizzard’s statement offered no specific reasons for his departure. Kaplan said he had expected to retire at the company but the CFO meeting changed everything.

Overwatch 2 launched in October 2022, more than a year after Kaplan’s exit. The game shifted to a free-to-play model and eventually scaled back major PvE plans that had been promised during the original announcement. The changes reflected broader shifts in how Blizzard approached the franchise after Kaplan’s departure.
