Jeff Kaplan broke his public silence to announce The Legend of California, an open-world survival shooter set during the Gold Rush era. The game marks the veteran developer’s first major project since leaving Blizzard Entertainment in 2021.
Kaplan revealed the project during an appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast. According to the official description, players can explore a frontier version of the “mythical Island of California” either solo or with friends.
The game sits squarely in the survival crafting genre. Expect the usual loop of gathering resources, building bases, and fighting to survive in a harsh environment. The Gold Rush setting offers a twist on the formula though.
The “Island of California” isn’t just marketing speak. Old maps from the 16th and 17th centuries actually depicted California as an island rather than part of the mainland. This cartographic myth persisted for over 200 years before being corrected.
Kaplan spent years as the public face of Overwatch, appearing in countless developer updates and serving as game director. Before that, he worked on World of Warcraft. His departure from Blizzard in April 2021 came during a turbulent period for the company.
The game is reportedly connected to Dreamhaven, the publishing label founded by former Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. Dreamhaven supports independent studios formed by ex-Blizzard developers.
The Legend of California targets an Early Access release in 2026. No specific platforms have been confirmed yet, though most survival games launch on PC first before expanding to consoles.
