League of Legends junglers have a frustration that’s been building for years. When they pick up the Eye of the Rift Herald, it replaces their trinket slot—meaning they temporarily lose access to their warding totem or Oracle Lens sweeper.
A growing conversation among players proposes a simple fix. Move the held Herald to the role quest keybind slot instead. For junglers, this slot sits mostly unused in the current game. Using it for Herald would let them hold the objective without sacrificing vision control.
The trinket slot matters more than casual players might realize. Junglers rely on Oracle Lens to clear enemy wards around objectives like Dragon and Baron. They need quick ward access for gank setups and safety while invading enemy jungle. Losing this tool mid-game creates an awkward choice between holding Herald for optimal timing or maintaining vision control.
Some champions get hit particularly hard by this mechanic. Lee Sin needs wards to execute his signature ward-hop plays using his Safeguard ability. When Herald occupies his trinket slot, he loses instant access to ward placement. His mobility and playmaking potential take a direct hit.
Jax jungle faces similar issues. Any champion that depends on quick ward placement for mechanical plays feels the constraint. Players report accidentally trying to use their trinket out of muscle memory, only to accidentally trigger Herald at the wrong moment.
One implementation question hangs over the proposal. Non-junglers can also pick up the Eye of the Herald. If the change only applies to junglers, the behavior becomes inconsistent depending on which role grabs it. Some suggest giving every role a dedicated Herald slot to avoid this problem.
Not everyone agrees with the change. Some players argue the current design creates intentional risk-reward decisions. Holding Herald for perfect timing should come with a cost—namely losing trinket utility. Removing that tradeoff could reduce meaningful macro decisions around objective control.

Players have described the moment they first grabbed Herald on Lee Sin and lost their ward-hop muscle memory as feeling “personally betrayed.” The frustration is real enough that some junglers admit to using Herald suboptimally just to regain sweeper access for important fights or objective setups.
