Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke confirmed that the studio’s next Divinity project will continue the turn-based, co-op friendly design formula established in recent games.

The clarification addresses speculation that Larian might return to the action RPG style of earlier Divinity titles like Divine Divinity and Divinity II: Ego Draconis. Instead, the next game will follow the approach that defined Divinity: Original Sin, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Baldur’s Gate 3.

Vincke explained that Larian aims to complete the next game faster than Baldur’s Gate 3 despite the scope. The studio now employs a significantly larger team than during BG3‘s early development. Larian plans to write quests and story content in parallel rather than sequentially, leveraging their expanded workforce and experience gained from shipping BG3.

Larian’s commitment to multiplayer-friendly design means the game will support drop-in co-op where multiple players control different party members. This approach shaped both Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, influencing how dialogue systems, quest ownership, and companion interactions function.

The turn-based combat system allows for tactical depth and systemic interactions that became Larian’s signature after Original Sin launched in 2014. Baldur’s Gate 3‘s commercial and critical success proved the format’s mainstream appeal, with the game winning multiple Game of the Year awards in 2023.
