Larian Studios announced its next major project at The Game Awards 2025 on Thursday night. The game is called Divinity and it marks the studio’s return to its original fantasy universe after the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3.
The reveal came through a cinematic-only trailer that immediately shocked viewers with its graphic content. The trailer opens on what looks like a cheerful village festival centered around a large wicker statue. That lighthearted tone vanishes fast.
What comes next is an extended sequence of ritual horror. A man burns alive inside the statue. The camera lingers on his flesh charring and blistering as he screams. The trailer cuts between shots of gore, a character vomiting while a pig eats it, and what appears to be a draconic figure having sex with a woman in a straddling position.
The editing deliberately juxtaposes festival joy with graphic torture. It’s hard M-rated content pushed to its limit for a mainstream gaming showcase.
For most of the trailer, viewers didn’t know what game they were watching. Many assumed it was a Diablo 4 expansion or a Witcher project. But when the Larian Studios logo appeared near the end, there were many audible reactions during live watch parties.
The title card simply reads “Divinity” without the “Original Sin” subtitle. This signals a return to the core Divinity brand rather than a third entry in the Original Sin sub-series.
Larian and Game Awards host Geoff Keighley both described the project as the studio’s “biggest and most ambitious RPG yet.” They claim it will be larger in scope than Baldur’s Gate 3, which seems almost impossible given that game’s already massive scale.
The Divinity series began in 2002 with Divine Divinity, an isometric action RPG. Later entries like Divinity II: Ego Draconis shifted to third-person action gameplay and let players transform into dragons. The series has always mixed dark themes with whimsical writing.
Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel switched to turn-based CRPG combat and brought Larian widespread acclaim. Those games took place in the same universe, called Rivellon, but focused on different story threads. The lore has always included cult rituals, tyrannical sorcerers, and blood-soaked histories. This new trailer just depicts that darkness with far more graphic realism than past games.
Dropping the “Original Sin” subtitle has many speculating the new game will return to action RPG roots rather than turn-based combat. Larian hasn’t confirmed the gameplay style yet.
What comes next for Rivellon
The studio gave no release window, showed no gameplay, and revealed no story details beyond the ritual horror vignette. No platform list was announced either. Given the stated scope and typical AAA development cycles, some industry watchers don’t expect it before 2028.
Before The Game Awards, Larian teased the announcement with a marketing stunt. They placed a physical statue matching the one in the trailer in a desert location and shared GPS coordinates on social media. Online sleuths connected it to Larian after spotting a new Divinity logo trademark filing days earlier.
