Nintendo has taken down an infamous Animal Crossing: New Horizons island that depicted an adult-themed red-light district using the game’s family-friendly assets. The Japanese creator’s island had been accessible to players for years before Nintendo finally acted.

After the removal, the creator posted a message that roughly translates to thanking Nintendo for “turning a blind eye all these years.” The comment reads as equal parts gratitude and sarcastic farewell.

The island became notorious for pushing the boundaries of what players could imply within the game’s wholesome framework. While nothing explicitly sexual appeared on screen, the island’s entire design centered around adult entertainment venues common in Japan’s nightlife districts.

Players who visited the island through its Dream Address encountered what appeared to be a “muryou annaijo” or free information center. In Japan, these centers are known for directing customers to hostess clubs and similar establishments. From there, the island offered a tour through various adult-oriented locations.

The design included love hotels featuring oversized statues of Michelangelo’s David, emphasizing the classical sculpture’s nudity. Adult shops sold schoolgirl costumes and implied sex toys. Other areas depicted what appeared to be brothels, strip clubs, and an Edo-era inspired red-light district.

The creator used standard game items to build these scenes. Trash scattered around buildings, pachinko parlors, smoking areas, and “natural herb” vending setups added to the seedy atmosphere. Worker residences included suggestive details like used tissues and crush posters.

Dream Addresses in Animal Crossing let players share snapshot versions of their islands that others can visit without affecting the original. This feature has enabled elaborate themed builds, from recreations of famous locations to horror-themed experiences. Nintendo can moderate this shared content under its community guidelines.

The company’s terms of service prohibit sexually explicit or inappropriate content, even when implied through context rather than shown directly. While individual reports may have flagged the island over time, Nintendo’s brand protection priorities likely played a major role in the eventual removal.

The island demonstrates how creative players exploit the gap between innocent assets and suggestive arrangements. Everything used existed in the base game as intended. The adult themes emerged entirely from placement and context.
