Obsidian Entertainment just released an official Anniversary Update trailer for Avowed announcing a substantial free update focused on character creation and gameplay systems.

The update adds multiple playable races that weren’t available at launch. Players can now create characters from races previously seen only as NPCs, including Aumaua (the large aquatic-featured people), Orlans (small furry humanoids), and Dwarves. These races come straight from the Pillars of Eternity universe that Avowed is set in.

Each race now comes with its own perk boosts making the choice mechanically meaningful rather than purely cosmetic. The update also expands Godlike customization options with additional facial features and hairstyles. Godlike are Eora’s distinctive race of individuals marked by divine influence.

A new camp mirror feature lets players completely recreate their character using all the new options without starting over. This means anyone who already finished the game can jump back in and experiment with the expanded creator.

New Game Plus is coming as part of the update giving players a structured way to replay while carrying over progression. The exact rules for what transfers between playthroughs haven’t been detailed yet.

Combat gets a boost with at least one new weapon type. A staff weapon is being added alongside general weapon balancing and adjustments. The update also includes various fixes and smaller additions.

What this update isn’t

Obsidian made clear this update focuses on systems and gameplay rather than narrative. There’s no story rewrite or major companion overhaul planned. The core campaign and character arcs remain untouched.

The timing makes sense for an anniversary beat. These types of updates serve multiple purposes. They give existing players a reason to return while improving the first impression for new buyers. Character creator expansions are consistently among the most requested RPG improvements since they affect every playthrough and generate tons of social sharing.
