TL;DR
  • Bloober Team confirms the original 1999 Silent Hill is being remade and has entered full production phase.
  • No platforms, release date, or gameplay details have been revealed yet for Harry Mason's return to the foggy town.
  • The remake continues Konami's aggressive push to revive Silent Hill with multiple new projects and remakes.

Bloober Team has officially confirmed that a full remake of the original 1999 Silent Hill is now in active development in their latest investor sessions. The studio announced that the project has entered “full production,” marking a significant milestone for the horror classic that started it all.

The Polish developer earned their Silent Hill credentials with last year’s Silent Hill 2 remake, which modernized James Sunderland’s psychological journey through the fog-covered town. Now they’re turning their attention to Harry Mason’s desperate search for his missing daughter Cheryl in the series’ debut entry.

Details remain scarce about the remake. Bloober Team hasn’t revealed platforms, release windows, or how they plan to update the 25-year-old game. No screenshots or trailers accompanied the announcement, leaving fans to wonder whether the remake will adopt the over-the-shoulder camera from Silent Hill 2‘s remake or try something different.

The original Silent Hill launched exclusively on PlayStation in 1999, introducing players to the cursed town through Harry’s eyes. After a car crash leaves him unconscious, Harry awakens to find Cheryl missing and the town shrouded in fog. What followed was a descent into occult horror featuring memorable locations like Midwich Elementary School and Alchemilla Hospital, plus the series’ signature Otherworld transformations.

Unlike Silent Hill 2‘s standalone psychological story, the first game established the town’s cult mythology and spawned a direct sequel in Silent Hill 3. The game’s technical limitations on PS1 hardware actually enhanced its atmosphere—the famous fog effect was originally added to hide rendering distance but became an iconic element of the series.

This remake represents another piece of Konami’s ambitious Silent Hill revival strategy. Since announcing multiple projects in 2022, the publisher has released Silent Hill 2 remake, the free Silent Hill: The Short Message, and the interactive series Silent Hill: Ascension. Still in development are Silent Hill: Townfall and the recently released Silent Hill f, showing Konami’s commitment to resurrecting the dormant franchise.

From tank controls to modern terror

Fans are already speculating about how Bloober Team will handle the remake’s unique challenges. The original’s fixed camera angles and tank controls feel ancient by today’s standards, but they contributed to the game’s tense atmosphere. Some worry that modernizing these elements might lose what made Silent Hill special, while others hope for quality-of-life improvements that make the horror more accessible.

“Full production” typically means the core development team is actively building levels, creating assets, and implementing gameplay systems. While this suggests the project has moved past early planning stages, modern game development can still take years from this point. Given Bloober Team’s experience with Silent Hill 2‘s remake, they at least have a proven framework to build upon.
