The voice actor Fareeha for Overwatch 2‘s newly revealed hero Anran publicly backed calls for a redesign after players noticed her in-game appearance differs sharply from earlier official materials. The actor described supporting a redesign as “a hill worth dying on” in social media comments that put fresh attention on the discrepancy.
Anran appeared in a Blizzard-produced cinematic trailer months ago with a distinctive facial structure and outfit. But when her in-game model was revealed, players immediately spotted the differences. Her face looks softer and rounder in the final version. Her outfit became more form-fitting compared to the uniform shown in the animated sequence.
The changes are significant enough that players started creating comparison posts. Multiple fans pointed out that Anran’s in-game face closely resembles existing heroes like Kiriko and Juno. Some made overlay images claiming her facial features align almost exactly with other female heroes in the roster.
One comparison making rounds shows Anran’s model with different hairstyles swapped onto her head. In the edits, she becomes nearly indistinguishable from other heroes when just the hair changes. The same visual treatment applied to her brother Wuyang, who also appears in the game, doesn’t produce similar results.
The voice actor weighing in adds pressure Blizzard typically doesn’t face from internal collaborators. Voice talent rarely comment on art direction decisions. When they do, it signals the issue extends beyond player preferences into concerns visible to people working on the game itself.
Blizzard hasn’t addressed the design differences or confirmed any plans for a redesign. The company hasn’t explained why Anran’s appearance changed between the cinematic and in-game model. Official materials featuring both versions remain available on Blizzard’s channels without clarification about the discrepancy.
