Owlcat Games has shared new details about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn to PC Gamer, positioning the upcoming RPG as a companion-focused action game in the vein of Mass Effect. The game will center on building relationships with crew members through frequent conversations, personal sidequests, and squad-based combat.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn marks a departure from Owlcat’s previous titles. Unlike their isometric CRPGs Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, this game will be an action RPG. Players will engage in explosive combat alongside companions who can pull them into personal storylines and loyalty missions.

The game is set in The Expanse universe, following the TV show’s continuity rather than the original novels by James S. A. Corey. It features an original story within that world rather than retelling events from the books or show. The Expanse is known for its grounded approach to space travel and political tension between Earth, Mars, and the Belt.

Developers have specifically confirmed that Belters will be portrayed as physically stretched out and taller in the game. This detail reflects the novels’ and show’s depiction of humans adapted to low-gravity environments. Early trailers already showcase notably tall Belter characters.

Owlcat has built a reputation for strong companion writing across their previous games. Each title featured deep character arcs, extensive dialogue trees, and reactive storytelling based on player choices. The Expanse setting will present a new challenge though, as it lacks the fantastical elements and alien party members that defined Mass Effect‘s squad dynamics.

Despite ongoing marketing that references beta testing and early access, Owlcat hasn’t announced an official release date for The Expanse: Osiris Reborn. Players have noted ads promoting sign-ups for testing phases, but the studio remains silent on when the full game will launch.
