Rainbow Six Siege players woke up to a shock today, finding their accounts loaded with billions in in-game currency. This follows what appears to have been a major backend security breach.
Earlier today, fans of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege reported billions of credits and Renown being dumped into their accounts, in addition to a smorgasbord of rare loot and developer skins. Moreover, major streamers and other players have been randomly banned, suggesting that the hackers may have gained access to backend administrative tools.
Former pro-player KingGeorge put out a YouTube Short to spread the news, advising that players “don’t even bother logging in” to avoid being compromised in turn, as well as to avoid ensuing bans from spending hacked currency.
KingGeorge also mentioned that the Rainbow Six Siege anticheat is “kernel level,” meaning that it has an especially high level of system access. Therefore, if this anticheat is indeed compromised (which seems to be the case) hackers could potentially gain in-depth access to a victim’s systems.
In terms of an official response, Ubisoft put out an official statement just hours ago on the game’s official X account. The company first stated that it was aware of the breach and “working on a resolution,” before shortly updating with an announcement that Siege and its marketplace have intentionally been shut down for the time being.
At time of writing, there has been no further update from Ubisoft.
An unprecedented attack
Fans have been less-than-sympathetic to Ubisoft at this time, and it’s easy to see why. While taking down the game should stem the tide, the fact hackers could get as far as they have is incredibly surprising and worrying. Many unsuspecting players may have already been victims to these hackers and their incredible level of access, which could put them in a hugely compromised position.
Furthermore, this attack demonstrates the problem with live service games, not only in terms of vulnerabilities, but the lack of ownership tied to them.
It is advised that players stand by and wait for updates from the game’s official X account.
