TL;DR
  • Cassiopeia can now buy boots after a recent update removed her years-long restriction.
  • Her old passive gave scaling movement speed but locked her out of boots, while her new passive makes movement speed bonuses more effective.
  • Riot changed this because new season role quests reward boot upgrades, and balancing Cassiopeia around them was too complicated.

Cassiopeia can now buy boots in League of Legends. The change removes one of the champion’s most iconic mechanical quirks after years of her being unable to purchase footwear.

If you haven’t played Cassiopeia recently, here’s what changed. Her old passive prevented her from buying boots entirely. The shop wouldn’t let you purchase them. Instead, she gained movement speed automatically as she leveled up.

This created a unique tradeoff. Cassiopeia effectively had an extra item slot late game since she never needed to dedicate one to boots. But she paid for it with sluggish movement speed for most of the match. Players report she didn’t match standard boots movement speed until around level 13.

League of Legends‘ new season introduced role quest systems that reward players with boot upgrades. Mid lane gets “super boots” as a role quest reward. Bot lane has similar boot-related quests. Cassiopeia became a nightmare to balance around these systems.

Her new passive reads: “All Move Speed bonuses are more effective on Cassiopeia.” This means boots and other movement speed items work better on her than on other champions. She still gets a movement advantage, just through a different method.
