Riot Games has officially confirmed a massive overhaul of League of Legends, poised for post-2026. This announcement arrives hot-off-the-heels of a Bloomberg report that revealed internal plans for ‘League Next’ early.

Yesterday, Bloomberg got ahead of the curve with its report on the future of League of Legends, revealing that everything from aesthetics to UI to gameplay pillars will get a facelift. T

The update, slated for 2027, will reportedly be the biggest in the game’s history. Moreover, a number of anonymous employees spoke to Bloomberg about how this major update will be coming with a major internal reorganization of workers. This aspect has yet to be elaborated upon publicly.

The Riot Games team has now confirmed the major update, posting an official video on the subject to X (seemingly a clip from the upcoming January 2026 dev update). In the piece, executive producer Paul Belleza and head of League Studio Andrei Van Roon discuss elements of the update, more-or-less putting it on a level approaching a League of Legends 2.

In addition to new gameplay, visuals, and overhauled new player experience, the duo also announced a fully new League of Legends client. This part of the clip has provoked particular excitement in fans, especially on sites like X, Reddit, and YouTube.

Potential avenues for League Next

When this 2027 update releases, League’s architecture will be about 16 years old, an age which is already starting to show. Given how excited fans are about a new client, it’s self evident that a big reason behind this update has to relate to League of Legends‘ glitches, many of which have stemmed from faults in the client. Undoubtedly, patching this aspect of the title up will do a lot to please fans.

Moreover, though this is only speculation, it’s possible that Riot might want the future of League to echo its tie-in series Arcane. Netflix’s Arcane is hugely popular, and in many ways far more respected than League itself. However, despite huge investment in the show, it’s hard to say whether the success of Arcane has turned into better numbers in-game.

There’s a chance that Riot could use this update to bring the game and the series closer together, especially with the emphasis on artistic overhaul.
