Riot Games quietly implemented a quality-of-life change for Shyvana that addresses one of her most frustrating mechanical quirks. Her Fury resource now continues generating while she’s dead.
This matters because Shyvana’s ultimate is gated by Fury instead of a traditional cooldown. Most champions respawn with their ultimate available or close to ready because cooldown timers tick down during death. Shyvana couldn’t do this.
The old system created nightmare scenarios in late-game base defenses. A player could respawn with the enemy team knocking on their Nexus and have zero access to dragon form. Without minions or jungle camps nearby to auto-attack, there was no way to rebuild Fury fast enough.
ARAM players felt this pain constantly. The mode’s single-lane design and frequent deaths meant Shyvana spent more time respawning without her ultimate than other champions. Her “cooldown” effectively lasted longer than everyone else’s.
The change brings Shyvana in line with how ultimate availability works for the rest of the roster. Death is already a massive penalty. Losing access to your signature ability on top of that felt like getting punished twice.
Ultimate Haste items become even more interesting on Shyvana now. These items boost her passive Fury regeneration, meaning she can transform more often. Experimental Hexplate has emerged as a surprisingly strong option because it stacks Ultimate Haste with other stats she wants.
Dragons don’t do downtime
This isn’t the first time Riot has made this type of adjustment. Annie previously received a similar fix that let her respawn with passive stacks available. The pattern suggests Riot wants to remove these feel-bad edge cases where resource-gated champions get disproportionately punished by death.
Some players worry the change could be overpowered since Shyvana can sometimes extend her dragon form duration. Others argue it simply puts her on equal footing with standard ultimate cooldowns. A late-game respawn timer is long enough that most champions come back with their big ability ready anyway.
