Sony dropped some impressive numbers in its latest investor communication. Ghost of Yōtei moved more copies than Ghost of Tsushima did during the same post-launch period. The company also told investors the game significantly boosted PlayStation’s financial performance.
The comparison tracks sales velocity rather than lifetime totals. Yōtei hit higher numbers in its opening stretch than Tsushima managed back in 2020. Sony used phrases like “significantly contributed” to describe the game’s impact on recent financial results.
Ghost of Tsushima launched in July 2020 for PS4. Sucker Punch’s samurai action game became one of PlayStation’s biggest first-party wins that generation. The game eventually sold over 10 million copies and earned expansions plus a PS5 Director’s Cut.
Ghost of Yōtei shifts the setting north to Hokkaido in 1603. Players follow a new protagonist navigating a different region and time period. The game refines the original’s combat system with weapon swapping mechanics and introduces firearms as environmental threats later in the story.
The game features Ainu culture prominently. The Ainu are indigenous to Hokkaido and surrounding regions. Their representation in major gaming releases is rare, making Yōtei’s cultural focus notable.
Sequels typically accelerate faster than originals at launch. Established franchises bring built-in audiences and stronger preorder numbers. The PS5 install base in 2025 also dwarfs what PS4 offered in mid-2020, giving Yōtei a larger potential market from day one.
Sony hasn’t disclosed exact unit sales for either game’s launch window. The company keeps specific figures close during initial release periods. Investors got percentages and contribution language rather than hard numbers.
