Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided to phase out the “PlayStation Network” and “PSN” branding across its platforms. The company confirmed it wants to “properly capture the breadth of our evolving digital services” by dropping the legacy terminology.
The change affects a name that’s been core to PlayStation’s online identity since the PS3 era. PSN has served as the umbrella term for everything from account sign-ins and friends lists to the PlayStation Store and trophy systems.
Sony hasn’t announced what replaces the PSN branding. The company’s communication about the phase-out doesn’t mention a new name or service label. This leaves players guessing whether Sony will simply use “PlayStation” as a catch-all term or lean harder into PlayStation Plus branding.
The distinction between PSN and PS Plus has always confused casual players. PSN referred to the entire network infrastructure—your account, friends, messaging, and store access. PS Plus is the paid subscription that unlocks online multiplayer and monthly game catalogs across Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers.
Since 2022’s PS Plus overhaul turned the service into a three-tier subscription system, the line between network and service has gotten fuzzier. Online multiplayer on PS4 and PS5 requires PS Plus for most paid games, making the subscription feel like the de facto online service.
This isn’t Sony’s first attempt at rebranding its network. The company tried pushing “Sony Entertainment Network” (SEN) during the PS3 and Vita era as a cross-device media umbrella. That branding quietly disappeared as “PSN” remained the dominant term among players and in official documentation.
Players will likely notice the changes in account creation flows, terms of service documents, and outage communications. Error messages and support pages that currently reference PSN will probably shift to new terminology. The PlayStation 5 interface and mobile app could see updated language in future updates.
Your account isn’t going anywhere. The infrastructure remains the same—Sony is just changing what it calls the service. Your friends list, trophies, purchases, and subscriptions continue as normal.
