Sucker Punch Productions will continue making one game at a time after their Ghost of Yotei release. Studio head Brian Fleming indicated during recent press interviews with VGC that the PlayStation-owned developer has no plans to split into multiple concurrent development teams.
The statement came during Ghost of Yotei‘s ongoing press tour. Fleming told outlets the studio prefers focusing its full resources on a single project rather than juggling multiple productions simultaneously.
This approach means longer waits between releases. With Ghost of Yotei currently in development, fans hoping for new entries in dormant franchises like inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper face an extended timeline. Modern AAA games typically take four–six years to produce, and Sucker Punch’s single-project model ensures those gaps between titles.
Fleming also confirmed the Ghost franchise will remain exclusively set in Japan. In an interview with UnGeek reported by Game8, he stressed the series’ core identity is intrinsically Japanese. The studio doesn’t envision taking the franchise to other locations or time periods outside Japan.
Sucker Punch has historically operated this way since its founding in 1997. The studio built its reputation on focused productions: the Sly Cooper trilogy on PS2, the inFAMOUS series on PS3 and PS4, and most recently Ghost of Tsushima in 2020. Sony acquired the developer in 2011.
Ghost of Tsushima sold strongly and received critical praise, establishing Sucker Punch’s current trajectory. The game received a Director’s Cut expansion with the Iki Island content and a PS5 version. A PC port handled by Nixxes launched in 2024, further expanding the audience.
The single-project approach contrasts with Insomniac Games, another PlayStation studio that operates multiple teams simultaneously. Insomniac has shipped Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Spider-Man 2, and is currently developing Wolverine. Most other PlayStation Studios teams focus on one flagship project at a time, including Naughty Dog and Santa Monica Studio.
Sucker Punch previously stated in 2022 it had no plans to revisit Sly Cooper or inFAMOUS, citing the focus required by current projects. Fleming’s recent comments reinforce that position.
Ghost of Yotei takes its name from Mount Yotei in Hokkaido, Japan. The setting aligns with Fleming’s emphasis on maintaining the series’ Japanese cultural foundation. The original Ghost of Tsushima depicted the 1274 Mongol invasion of Tsushima Island during the Kamakura period.
