A major leak has revealed an unannounced Tomb Raider game called Legacy of Atlantis. The leak includes cover art formatted for Steam, multiple screenshots, and a short trailer that was quickly hit with an Amazon DMCA takedown notice.

The DMCA action strongly suggests the material is genuine. Amazon Games is publishing the next Tomb Raider title after securing a deal with Crystal Dynamics in 2022.

The leaked cover art shows Lara Croft in her classic green tank top and shorts with dual pistols drawn. She stands in front of a temple with jungle foliage and snowy mountains in the background. The image uses Steam’s standard 600×900 pixel dimensions for library cover art, which is another mark for its authenticity.

Screenshots reveal a new 3D character model that blends elements from different Tomb Raider eras. Lara wears her classic outfit but with a more realistic, modern design that matches her 2022 appearance as an operator skin in Call of Duty.

The trailer footage shows platforming sequences through jungle ruins and temple interiors. Brief dialogue snippets suggest a more confident, quippy Lara compared to the traumatized survivor persona from the 2013-2018 reboot trilogy.

Putting it all together, some fans have speculated it to be a remake of sorts of the first instalment in Lara’s journey, which would fit the iconic depiction. A few, though, have suggested the trailer could even be AI-generated in-part due to the low quality leaked trailer. It would not be the first time a Tomb Raider AI scandal has occured, either.

Merging the Tomb Raider timelines

What has made some fans so sure it’s a remake are some of the callbacks that Legacy of Atlantis is making. The title references Atlantean artifacts and villain Jacqueline Natla from the first game’s storyline.

This direction was foreshadowed by Shadow of the Tomb Raider‘s deleted ending. The cut scene showed Lara at Croft Manor receiving a letter from Natla, hinting that the next game would bridge the original story with the Survivor trilogy.

Tomb Raider has three separate timelines. The original series ran from 1996 to 2003. The LAU era covered Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld from 2006 to 2008. The Survivor reboot started in 2013 and concluded with Shadow in 2018.

Crystal Dynamics has publicly stated plans to unify these timelines into a single canonical version of Lara Croft. Legacy of Atlantis seems designed to execute that strategy by reimagining TR1’s story with the modern Lara.

This would be the third time TR1 has been remade. Tomb Raider Anniversary launched in 2007 as a full remake within the LAU continuity. Earlier this year, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered updated the original trilogy with modern visuals while preserving the classic gameplay.

The new game is being built on Unreal Engine 5. Crystal Dynamics confirmed the engine switch in 2022 when announcing their next Tomb Raider project.

Two games planned for 2026 and 2027

The Game Awards social media accounts recently teased a Tomb Raider announcement with a Lara pose that matches the leaked cover art. The timing suggests an official reveal is imminent.

According to insider reports, Crystal Dynamics plans to announce two Tomb Raider games. Legacy of Atlantis is positioned as a TR1 remake for the franchise’s 30th anniversary with a 2026 target. A separate mainline entry often called TR12 would follow in 2027.
