Emiru was sexually assaulted during her official meet-and-greet at TwitchCon. An attendee made non-consensual physical contact with the streamer in an incident captured on a live IRL stream and later shared widely on social media. Here’s a quick recap on the situation and Twitch’s initial response.
About a week after the assault, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy posted a formal statement addressing the security failure. He apologized directly to Emiru and said the company takes full responsibility for what happened at the event.
“I want to be upfront and take accountability for the security incident that occurred during Emiru’s Meet and Greet,” Clancy wrote. The CEO committed to a comprehensive review of security planning, staffing, training, and execution for all future TwitchCon events.
Emiru later said she was grateful the incident was captured on stream. She didn’t think it would have been taken seriously without video evidence.
Clancy’s statement also addressed IRL streaming at TwitchCon directly. “We have heard concerns about IRL streaming at TwitchCon. Twitch has evolved over the years, and IRL streaming is a part of Twitch. But, we need to ensure that TwitchCon meets the needs of a variety of participants,” he wrote. The company will review how IRL streaming is handled at the convention and announce changes soon.
The assault highlights ongoing security problems at TwitchCon. Attendees have reported multiple issues at the same event, including accessibility problems, unclear security protocols, and inconsistent enforcement of safety rules. Community reports suggest the assailant may have bypassed crowd control barriers to reach Emiru.
Standard security practices at major conventions typically include controlled queues, dedicated security personnel for high-profile talent, buffer zones, and clear incident protocols. Many events use layered security with venue staff, contracted security, and talent-specific protection working together.
What changes are coming
Twitch hasn’t specified exactly what the security overhaul will include or when the new IRL streaming policies will be announced. The company said it will share more details soon.
What happened has raised questions about whether creator safety at TwitchCon has kept pace with the event’s growth. Some attendees called for Twitch to hire an outside firm to investigate and release a public report on security failures.
