Twitch streamer Zoil was threatened with violence during a livestream after an older man fixated on his appearance and assumed he might be Muslim. This happened while Zoil was walking along a road outside Austin, Texas during one of his streams.
The man, who identified himself as an Army veteran, pulled over and approached the streamer. He focused on a scarf Zoil was wearing and claimed he had worn a similar scarf in Syria. The man then stated he had killed “a lot of Muslims” and warned Zoil “you better not be one” before threatening to kill him too.
The confrontation was captured live on stream. The man had initially offered Zoil and his team a ride before threatening him based on his appearance. Zoil ultimately chose not to get into the vehicle and continued walking instead.
IRL streams regularly put creators in unpredictable situations with strangers. The format requires streamers to navigate real-world safety concerns while broadcasting live to thousands of viewers. Encounters can escalate quickly, and streamers have limited ability to screen who approaches them in public spaces.
