Vince Zampella, original co-creator of Call of Duty and Titanfall, has died after a car crash outside Los Angeles.
One of gaming’s greatest and most influential developers behind modern first person shooters, Zampella was a leading figure in the industry for three decades. His handywork can be felt in most modern FPS titles following the mark the early Call of Duty games have left on the genre.
Details about the incident are sparse, but both Zampella and another identified individual were killed when the car veered off the road. One was taken to hospital where they would not make a recovery, while the other died at the scene.
The news comes at a time when Zampella had a lot of creative sway within the industry. Having been firing from Infinity Ward following Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2‘s release, Zampella took the opportunity to start Infinity Ward, where he lead development on the beloved Titanfall franchise, as well as branching out with hits such as Apex Legends and the Star Wars: Jedi saga.
In 2021, following the troubled launch of Battlefield 2042, EA placed Zampella in charge of the entire Battlefield franchise. This lead to the far better received Battlefield 6, and Zampella’s experience in his previous roles shepherding FPS games has often been credited for the game’s more grounded, realistic approach.
Fans and industry personalities alike have taken to social media in shock at Zampella’s passing. For many people, Zampella was a core part of their early memories in gaming, whether they knew it or not at the time, with games like Call of Duty spawning the infamously hostile Xbox Live lobby experience.
Zampella leaves a strong legacy behind him
The veteran of so many iconic franchises leaves some very large shoes to fill, but in his wake, his influence will surely still be felt for many years to come. It is unclear as of yet how this will affect the various projects he was involved with.
Zampella’s talent and experience will be missed by many in the gaming industry, but this should not overshadow the loss that has been inflicted on his family. The story is still developing, and so far none have spoken publically about the event.
