League of Legends content creators found themselves in an unexpected battle this week, but not on Summoner’s Rift. Streamer Seraclin reported receiving copyright claims on videos featuring music from Riot Games’ official “creator-safe” playlist. The claims came from Virgin Music Group, despite Riot’s explicit guidelines stating these tracks are free for content creators to use.
The affected music comes from Riot’s “Sessions” series, which includes themed collections like “Sessions: Vi,” “Sessions: Diana,” and “Sessions: Taliyah.” These playlists were specifically designed to provide background music that creators could use in streams and videos without fear of copyright strikes.
Riot Games’ published guidelines make it clear these tracks won’t trigger copyright claims as long as creators follow some simple attribution rules. The company even tells creators to reach out if they ever hit a snag with the system.
The problem seems to be tied to automated copyright detection systems that Virgin Music Group uses. Overnight, multiple videos on demand (VODs) got flagged for the exact same Sessions track, leaving creators frustrated and worried about their channel’s safety.
After creators called it out, Riot employees said they were aware of what was going on and started working on fixing the mistaken claims. A Riot representative named “RiotSakaar” reached out to users who’d been hit, asking for links to their flagged videos so the claims could be cleared up.
