Luke Ross just lost his main distribution channel. The VR modder’s Patreon account was suspended after receiving a DMCA takedown notice tied to Ghostrunner publisher 505 Games.
Ross specializes in creating “flat-to-VR” conversion mods that let players experience traditional PC games in virtual reality. He distributes these mods exclusively through Patreon, where subscribers pay for access to his VR injector framework and game-specific modules.
The suspension marks the second major DMCA action against Ross in recent weeks. CD Projekt Red previously targeted his Cyberpunk 2077 VR mod after it gained attention on Patreon.
According to reports, CDPR offered Ross a compromise. They told him he could continue working on the Cyberpunk VR mod if he made it free to download while still accepting voluntary donations. Ross refused that arrangement.
CDPR responded by filing a DMCA takedown. Now 505 Games has followed suit with their own notice regarding Ghostrunner.
The monetization model sits at the heart of the dispute. Ross gates his mods behind Patreon subscriptions rather than offering them for free with optional donations. Users must maintain active subscriptions to receive updates when games patch and break mod compatibility.
Publishers typically tolerate free mods. They get much testier when modders charge money for work built on top of their intellectual property.
