Playground Games finally opened the gates to Albion. At gamescom 2026, the studio presented roughly 18 minutes of Fable quest gameplay, most of it set in and around Bowerstone.
This wasn’t a cinematic sizzle reel. The demo followed one quest from start to finish, with city exploration, NPC chatter, a lengthy conversation scene, and several combat encounters.
The quest centers on the Heroes’ Guild, and its current state isn’t great. The Hero meets a scruffy, apparently drunk Guild Master who explains, at length, what happened to the organization. Short version: it got sold.
The scene uses direct-to-camera cutaways, with the Guild Master breaking off from the conversation to explain himself to the audience. Viewers immediately compared the format to The Office and What We Do in the Shadows.
Sword, bow, and fireballs
Combat covers the classic Fable trio. The Hero swaps between sword strikes, a bow, and projectile magic mid-fight, with dodging, blocking, and parrying used to break up enemy pressure. Spells appear to run on cooldowns, and no traditional mana bar was visible in the footage.
Regular human enemies get interrupted, knocked down, launched into the air, or dropped with a well-placed arrow. One crossbow user keeps the Hero moving. The final fight introduces a roughly 10-foot axe-wielding brute who eats an enormous amount of damage and barely flinches.
That’s where the presenter dropped a useful detail: “I am currently playing on Legend mode, one of our harder difficulties.” So Legend is a high setting, but not necessarily the hardest one. Playground hasn’t detailed the full difficulty list.
Not everything landed. The axe brute drew criticism for showing almost no hit reaction, with arrows vanishing on impact and sword strikes producing little stagger. Facial animation and lip-sync looked uneven during the indoor Guild Master scenes. Doors also seemed to swing open automatically with no player animation. Some viewers found the modern slang jarring, though Fable has mixed fairy tales with British social satire since 2004.
Fable is a reboot rather than Fable IV, announced in 2020 and built by the Forza Horizon studio. Lionhead, the original creator, was shut down by Microsoft in 2016 after Fable Legends was canceled. The game is confirmed for Xbox Series X/S and PC with Game Pass.
