Playground Games’ long-awaited Fable reboot has reportedly been pushed back to February 2027, missing its previously expected 2026 release window.
The game had been lined up for a fall or late 2026 launch, with earlier reports pointing to an internal December target. The new window moves the RPG into early 2027, putting it well outside the busy holiday corridor.
Late 2026 is shaping up to be brutal. Grand Theft Auto VI is currently set for November 19, 2026, and is expected to dominate sales, streams, and headlines for weeks. Call of Duty and Gears of War: E-Day are also in the mix, along with a string of rumored heavy hitters.
Launching a brand-new fantasy RPG into that storm would have been a risky bet, especially for a franchise that has been dormant since Fable III in 2010. A February slot gives the game clean air and a chance to be the conversation rather than a footnote.
Microsoft has used this playbook before. Avowed was moved out of a packed 2024 lineup and landed in February 2025 with much more attention on it.
What we know about the reboot
The new Fable was revealed at Xbox’s July 2020 showcase and has been in development at Playground Games ever since. It’s a fresh start for the series rather than a direct sequel, keeping the British fantasy tone, dark humor, and player-choice systems the franchise is known for.
It’s also a massive pivot for Playground. The Leamington Spa studio built its reputation on Forza Horizon, and Fable is its first major non-racing project. That means new pipelines, new hires, and a whole new genre to learn, which likely explains the long runway.
The game is expected on Xbox Series X/S and PC, with day-one Xbox Game Pass availability in line with Microsoft’s first-party strategy.
If February 2027 holds, Fable will arrive nearly seven years after its reveal and 17 years after the last mainline entry. Whether Microsoft drops a fresh gameplay showcase before then remains to be seen.
