Polish filmmaker and podcaster Borys Nieśpielak has claimed that CD Projekt Red is working on a brand new story DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Nieśpielak stated he’s heard from multiple independent sources within Poland’s game development scene that the expansion is “100% real” and currently in production.
Nieśpielak later clarified on X that while he’s confident the DLC exists based on his sources, his suggestion that it could be revealed at The Game Awards 2025 is speculation rather than confirmed information.
According to reports, the expansion would be a medium-sized story addition. Sources describe it as larger than the free quest content CDPR added with the 2022 next-gen update but smaller than the Hearts of Stone expansion from 2015. The DLC is reportedly designed to serve as a narrative bridge between The Witcher 3 and the upcoming Witcher 4, which CDPR has codenamed Polaris.
The project is allegedly being developed primarily by Fool’s Theory, a Polish studio staffed partly by former CDPR developers. Fool’s Theory is already confirmed as the lead developer on the remake of the original Witcher game, making them familiar partners for CDPR. This outsourcing approach would allow CDPR to keep its internal teams focused on Polaris and the next Cyberpunk game while still expanding the Witcher 3 universe.
The timing would align with several factors working in CDPR’s favor. The Witcher 3 launched in May 2015, meaning a 2025 announcement would mark the game’s 10th anniversary. The title has sold over 60 million copies across all platforms and continues to attract new players through sales and the next-gen upgrade. A new expansion would also build momentum ahead of Witcher 4‘s eventual release.
Nieśpielak’s credibility comes from his connections within Poland’s tight-knit game development community. He has previously shared accurate information about CDPR projects, though not all his predictions have hit the mark. The key detail here is his insistence that multiple sources have independently confirmed the DLC’s existence to him.
One narrative challenge the DLC would need to address is The Witcher 3‘s multiple endings. Players can finish the game with Ciri becoming a witcher, becoming Empress of Nilfgaard, or disappearing entirely. CDPR has previously stated that Witcher 4 will be written to accommodate all three outcomes as canon. A bridging DLC could provide the narrative flexibility to honor player choices while still funneling everyone toward a coherent starting point for the next game.
Not quite blood and wine but we’ll take it
The gaming industry has seen this playbook before. Gearbox released Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary for Borderlands 2 roughly seven years after that game launched, specifically to set up Borderlands 3‘s story. The strategy keeps existing fans engaged while attracting lapsed players back into the ecosystem ahead of a major new release.
CD Projekt Red has not officially commented on or confirmed the existence of this DLC. The company’s public roadmap includes Polaris as the start of a new Witcher trilogy, The Witcher remake, and a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 codenamed Orion. Whether a surprise Witcher 3 expansion fits into that schedule remains to be seen.
