Reports suggest that FromSoftware, the acclaimed Japanese developer behind the Souls series and Elden Ring, has another unannounced project in active development that could hit shelves as early as 2025. Industry insiders have identified a project with the internal codename “FMC,” though no official details about the game’s title, genre, or platforms have emerged.
FromSoftware’s internal naming conventions often provide hints about upcoming releases. The studio typically uses the letter “F” in codenames for sequels, remasters, or expansions of existing properties. Previous examples include “FDP” for Dark Souls 3 and “FNR” for Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. This pattern has led to speculation that the mysterious “FMC” could be an expansion to the recently released Armored Core VI or possibly the long-rumored Dark Souls III remaster.
The timing aligns with FromSoftware’s consistent development cycle, which usually sees major releases every one to three years. Having just launched the critically acclaimed Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree expansion earlier this year, a 2025 release window for their next project would keep up this steady pace that has become a hallmark of the studio.
FromSoftware has historically filled the gaps between major new IPs with expansions or remastered versions of existing games. The Armored Core series, in particular, has a tradition of receiving substantial “.5” editions or standalone expansions following main entries. This approach would make an Armored Core VI expansion a likely next step.
However, the studio could also be returning to the Dark Souls franchise. Rumors of a Dark Souls III remaster have circulated for years, fueled by leaked images of bosses allegedly being reworked. While some of these assets ultimately showed up in other projects, the possibility remains that FromSoftware could be revisiting one of its most celebrated titles.
Praise the speculation
What makes this unannounced project especially interesting is FromSoftware’s track record of excellence. Under the direction of Hidetaka Miyazaki, the studio has consistently delivered critically acclaimed titles that have defined and redefined action RPGs. Their challenging gameplay, atmospheric worldbuilding, and cryptic storytelling have created a dedicated fanbase that eagerly anticipates each new release.
The studio’s ability to keep the quality high while juggling multiple projects at once is impressive in an industry that often deals with delays and dropping standards. With Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Elden Ring, and Armored Core VI all getting rave reviews in recent years, expectations for whatever “FMC” turns out to be are understandably high.
