“Many people in here did not start off as card-carrying Marxist-Leninists,” Hasan stated during his broadcast, suggesting that his commentary and discussions have led to a deliberate shift in his audience’s political ideology over time.
The term “card-carrying Marxist-Leninists” refers to committed supporters of a political ideology based on the teachings of Karl Marx and Vladimir Lenin. This political philosophy is historically associated with the Soviet Union and advocates for the abolition of capitalism, often through revolutionary means.
Hasan has long been open about his left-wing views, regularly criticizing US policies, Western capitalism, and right-wing politics. He began his career at progressive news outlet The Young Turks before building one of Twitch’s largest political communities, primarily made up of young adults.
This is one of Hasan’s clearest statements yet about his efforts to promote radical leftist ideology to his large online following. While he sometimes calls himself a “social democrat” or “progressive” in mainstream appearances, his Twitch content often features more explicitly socialist messaging.
Critics have often pointed out what they see as contradictions between Hasan’s lifestyle and his political stance. Despite pushing for Marxist ideals, Piker owns expensive property in Los Angeles and luxury vehicles, leading to accusations of hypocrisy.
“Hasan is one of the few Marxists with a Porsche and a Los Angeles mansion,” as one critic put it, highlighting the tension between his wealth and the anti-capitalist ideas he talks about.
Defenders say Hasan has never hidden his intentions, with many pointing out that he’s repeatedly said his goal is to radicalize young people through his platform. His growing audience shows that, even with the supposed contradictions, his approach is connecting with a lot of viewers.
