TL;DR
  • Elon Musk called Hasan Piker a "fraud" after former WoW developer Mark Kern criticized Hasan's Assassin's Creed sponsorship.
  • The dispute highlights tensions between mainstream sponsorships and politically outspoken content creators.
  • Community reactions were divided with many questioning why Musk involves himself in streamer drama.

Elon Musk jumped into gaming drama this week by branding well-known streamer Hasan Piker a “fraud” over his sponsored content for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.

This surprise criticism came after former World of Warcraft lead developer Mark Kern (known online as Grummz) tweeted that Ubisoft was supporting a “terrorist-platforming streamer” through their partnership with Hasan.

Musk, who keeps an eye on Twitter conversations about streamers despite running Tesla, SpaceX, and X, didn’t hesitate to share his opinion on the matter. His single-word response—”Fraud”—quickly caught fire on social media platforms.

The controversy focuses on Hasan, a political commentator and streamer known for his leftist views, receiving sponsorship from gaming giant Ubisoft for their upcoming title Assassin’s Creed: Shadows.

While sponsored content is standard in the streaming world, Kern’s tweet framed the partnership as problematic due to Hasan’s political stances.

This isn’t Musk’s first dive into online squabbles. The billionaire regularly engages in public disputes on social media, often targeting individuals who hold opposing political viewpoints. His involvement typically turns otherwise small conversations into full-blown controversies.

Pot calling the kettle black

Community reactions to Musk’s comment were mixed. Some users wondered why someone running several major companies would spend time engaging in streamer drama.

Others pointed out the irony of Musk and Kern calling someone else a “fraud.” The official Assassin’s Creed account even chimed in with their own response mocking Musk.

Hasan, who built his following through politically charged commentary after leaving media outlet The Young Turks, has faced similar criticism before.

His direct approach to politics makes him a frequent target for right-leaning critics, while his hypocritical participation in sponsored content from companies like Ubisoft draws flak from some on the left who question the consistency of his anti-capitalist, socialist messaging.

Update: Hasan blocks Elon Musk on X

As of writing the original article, the beef has continued online. Hasan told Elon to 1v1 him in Elden Ring so he could “roll his fat fucking ass” prompting the tech giant to double down on the hate.

Ultimately, the situation led to Elon being blocked on his own platform, prompting him to use some colourful and derogatory language toward Hasan.
