IShowSpeed was surrounded by angry Argentina supporters after their World Cup match, and the footage is now everywhere.

The clip shows Darren Watkins Jr. flanked by his bodyguards as fans lean in, shouting insults and throwing gestures at him. Speed had spent the match cheering for Argentina’s opponent, mocking Lionel Messi, and reacting loudly during a missed penalty. Argentina won anyway, and the fans came for him.

One man in a dark blue shirt does most of the talking, flexing his arms, puffing his chest, and making a crying motion at Speed. Others yell over him, gesture at the security detail, and tell Speed to leave.

The heat came from two things: a claim that one fan said “mono” (monkey), and the blue-shirt guy’s arm movements, which some interpreted as a monkey or gorilla gesture.

Why Speed was a target

None of this happened in a vacuum. Speed is arguably the loudest Ronaldo fan on the internet, and he leans into the Messi rivalry every chance he gets. At the match, he reportedly screamed during Messi’s penalty attempt and cheered every Argentina stumble.

Argentina fans, who treat Messi as a national treasure after the 2022 World Cup triumph, were never going to let that slide once their team won.

There’s also baggage. Argentina’s squad faced international criticism after Enzo Fernández livestreamed teammates singing a racist chant about French players following their 2024 Copa América win. FIFA and Chelsea both opened investigations. That controversy is why viewers are quick to read the worst into any Argentina fan clip.

Security kept the whole thing from turning physical. Speed hasn’t publicly addressed the confrontation yet, and no official statement has come from FIFA or the stadium about this specific moment.
