Jagex has announced another RuneScape membership price increase. This marks the second time in under two years that the company has raised subscription costs for its long-running MMORPG franchise.
The monthly membership now costs $14.99—matching World of Warcraft‘s standard subscription price. That’s a roughly $1 increase from the previous $13.99 monthly rate. The annual plan saw a steeper jump from around $100 to $129.99.
The new pricing applies to both RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape since membership covers both games on the same account.
The timing has players comparing RuneScape‘s value proposition directly to WoW. While both games now charge $15 per month, RuneScape membership works differently. Each subscription covers only one account. Players who maintain multiple accounts—like a main character plus an Ironman mode account or PvP alternative—need separate subscriptions for each.
World of Warcraft subscriptions cover all characters on a Battle.net account. One $15 payment unlocks both modern WoW and Classic versions with unlimited characters across both.
RuneScape launched in 2001 and exists today as two distinct versions. RuneScape 3 features updated graphics and systems along with more extensive microtransactions. Old School RuneScape rolled back to a 2007-era version of the game in 2013 and follows a more conservative approach to monetization.
The price increase comes after Jagex recently adjusted its microtransaction systems in RuneScape 3. The company removed certain loot box mechanics while maintaining other forms of purchasable content like XP boosts and cosmetics.
Players can still access membership without paying cash through Bonds. These are in-game items purchased with real money that other players can buy with in-game gold. Redeeming a Bond grants membership time. This system mirrors WoW’s Token economy.
Some longtime subscribers report issues with grandfathered pricing rates. Players who previously locked in lower legacy rates claim they lost those discounts after switching between monthly and annual plans. Jagex hasn’t publicly addressed these specific complaints.
The increase hits differently in various regions. Brazil-based players have raised concerns about pricing them out of the game entirely as the cost rises without proportional adjustment for local purchasing power.
