Jagex has officially announced RuneScape: Dragonwilds, a brand-new open-world survival crafting game set within the RuneScape universe. Released through a gameplay teaser trailer, Dragonwilds introduces players to Ashenfall, a forgotten continent where dragons have reawakened.
Unlike the traditional MMORPG format of RuneScape: Dragonwilds focuses on survival mechanics. Players will gather resources, build structures with physics-based construction systems, and develop skills to survive the harsh environment.
The trailer showcases building mechanics that require proper structural support, similar to those found in popular titles like Valheim.
The game runs on Unreal Engine 5, marking a significant technical departure from Jagex’s previous titles. This upgrade promises enhanced graphics and performance capabilities that bring the world of Ashenfall to life with more detail than ever before seen in a RuneScape title.
Combat appears to blend traditional survival game mechanics with RuneScape-inspired elements. Players can use spells and runes alongside physical weapons, offering variety in how they approach threats. The ultimate goal seems to involve uncovering ancient secrets and eventually defeating the Dragon Queen, either solo or with friends in co-op mode.
Jagex has confirmed Dragonwilds will be a one-time purchase rather than following the subscription or free-to-play models of their flagship titles. This decision may help address concerns about monetization that often surround online games.
Dragon-sized expectations
Community response has been mixed, with some excited about the RuneScape lore expansion while others express concern about the game potentially looking too similar to other Unreal Engine survival titles.
Jagex has faced challenges with previous ventures outside their core games, putting additional pressure on Dragonwilds to succeed.

RuneScape: Dragonwilds is scheduled to enter Early Access on PC in Spring 2025 and is currently available for wishlisting on Steam.
