Larian Studios has confirmed that Divinity: Original Sin 3 is not currently in development. Studio head Swen Vincke made the clarification when discussing the company’s post-Baldur’s Gate 3 plans.
The confirmation ends speculation that the studio would return to its turn-based CRPG sub-series after wrapping up work on Baldur’s Gate 3. Many fans assumed Original Sin 3 would be the natural next step given the commercial success of Divinity: Original Sin 2 and the refined combat systems Larian developed for BG3.
Vincke also jokingly noted that the studio is not working on a “toilet simulator” either. The throwaway line has become a recurring joke in discussions about Larian’s future projects.
This does not mean Larian is abandoning the Divinity universe entirely. The studio owns the IP and has repeatedly hinted that its next projects will return to that setting in some form.
The Divinity franchise is broader than just the Original Sin games. It includes Divine Divinity, an action RPG from 2002, along with Divinity II: Ego Draconis and the strategy-RPG hybrid Dragon Commander. Original Sin was always a sub-series within that larger world.
Recent trademark filings featuring Divinity-related imagery have fueled speculation that Larian’s next game will be set in the universe but outside the Original Sin continuity. Some fans believe the studio might return to its action RPG roots rather than continuing with turn-based combat.
What comes after Baldur’s Gate 3
Divinity: Original Sin 2 was the game that earned Larian enough credibility to land the Baldur’s Gate 3 license from Wizards of the Coast. Now with BG3‘s massive success, the studio has the resources and reputation to take its own IP in virtually any direction.
Larian has previously stated it is working on two new projects. One is described as “very ambitious” but details remain scarce. The studio has not provided a timeline for when it will officially announce its next game.
