TL;DR
  • Hundreds of modders are working together to create a custom campaign for Baldur's Gate 3.
  • The project includes about 55 writers across five teams but still needs more specialists.
  • The ambitious scale raises concerns about coordination challenges and potential legal issues with Dungeons & Dragons owner Wizards of the Coast.

A team of hundreds of modders has united to develop an ambitious custom campaign for Baldur’s Gate 3, pushing the boundaries of what fan-created content can achieve.

Led by a developer named Loughlin, the project has grown from a small team of 15 to a massive operation that rivals professional game development in scale.

The modding team currently includes approximately 55 writers spread across five writing teams, each with 10 to 15 members. This substantial writing force aims to create a comprehensive new adventure set within the Dungeons & Dragons universe that powers Baldur’s Gate 3‘s world and systems.

Despite the impressive number of writers, the team continues to recruit additional talent. They’re particularly looking for spatial designers, visual designers, programmers, and game designers, with a specific need for visual effects specialists to help bring their vision to life.

The scale of this operation has drawn both excitement and skepticism from the gaming community. Some observers question whether such a large writing team can maintain a unified creative vision, while others note that an RPG of this scale requires numerous writers to craft both main and side quests for a truly immersive experience.

“It’s a fully realized DND game. Who wouldn’t want to make custom campaigns?” remarked one enthusiastic fan, highlighting the natural appeal of creating new content for a game already designed to facilitate storytelling.

The project also faces potential challenges beyond coordination issues. Baldur’s Gate 3‘s modding tools are considered complex by many, and there are concerns about possible legal complications with Wizards of the Coast, who own the Dungeons & Dragons intellectual property, especially regarding the use of unofficial modding tools.

Roll for ambition

Successful large-scale mods like Enderal for Skyrim have shown that fan projects can achieve remarkable quality and scope. However, they typically require years of development and exceptional project management to reach completion.

Larian Studios, the developer behind Baldur’s Gate 3, hasn’t yet released official modding tools with the same depth as games like Skyrim or their previous title Divinity: Original Sin 2, adding an extra layer of challenge for this team of passionate creators.
