The Kai Cenat drama at last week’s Streamer Awards has yet to leave the community’s consciousness, but many big names would prefer to move on. In a new whirlwind of a clip, xQc exploded into a tirade against those hung up about the roast that still has fans at each other’s throats.
Taken from a recent stream, xQc went off on those who are still talking about fanfan’s roast of Kai Cenat, wherein she poked fun at his Streamer University gig, as well as his resemblance to Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. These jokes largely fell flat during the event, and added to what was, overall, a sour night for Cenat—with him once again losing Streamer of the Year to IShowSpeed.
Cenat’s fanbase, as well as a smorgasbord of streamers and influencers looking to weigh in, have reacted with more than a little venom, targeting fanfan for days following the incident. In discussing the situation, xQc’s feigned an outraged tantrum to mock those dragging the drama on. He ended his diatribe with further sarcasm, saying, “Making jokes? Not on my watch!”
Streaming culture is only growing more toxic
The ongoing spat, one made into a ceaseless ouroboros of takes and clips, is another example of the direction streaming culture is going in. The industry has scarcely been a haven of purity, but the movement away from gaming and towards the creation of big-name influencers, stuck cashing in on crypto and gambling ties ad infinitum, has the community in a deathgrip.
Even xQc’s quips are less of a call for cooler heads prevailing, and more a 2016-esque polemic against those that can’t take a joke.
Kick’s impact on streaming can’t be ignored, as the platform has served as a haven for all manner of debauchery. Kick has repeatedly refused to moderate streamers with more than a slap on the wrist for on-video crimes, let alone routine incidents of bigotry, harassment, or rumor-spinning. Events like this year’s Streamer Awards stand as a testament to how online entertainment is more and more resembling the endless scandal of big-money Hollywood, as opposed to the 380p productions of yesteryear.
