Bungie has reportedly moved Destiny 2 out of active development, and according to new reporting, most of the studio’s employees only found out when the rest of us did.

The claim, attributed to journalist Paul Tassi, suggests that the decision to wind down major development on the live-service shooter was made earlier in the year but kept inside a tight leadership circle. When the news went public, “almost all” Bungie staff were reportedly blindsided alongside players.

To be clear: Ending active development isn’t the same as shutting down servers. Destiny 2 is expected to remain online and playable. What appears to be ending is the expansion-driven, seasonal content pipeline that has defined the game since 2017.

Sony bought Bungie for around $3.6bn in 2022, betting heavily on the studio’s live-service expertise. Since then, Bungie has gone through multiple rounds of layoffs, lost longtime leadership including former CEO Pete Parsons, and seen roles consolidated into Sony Interactive Entertainment.

Meanwhile, Marathon, Bungie’s extraction shooter reboot, has underperformed expectations since launch. The studio is reportedly pivoting resources toward fixing and expanding that game, possibly with new PvE elements.

Destiny 3 hasn’t been greenlit. Sony made no mention of the Destiny IP in its most recent earnings call, and no successor project has been publicly confirmed.
