Gawr Gura, one of Hololive’s biggest virtual YouTuber stars, has announced her departure from the agency effective May 1, 2025.
The shark-themed VTuber cited disagreements with management as the main reason for her decision to “graduate”—the term used when talents leave their VTuber agencies.
The announcement comes after a noticeable decrease in Gura’s streaming activity over the past couple of years.
Despite being Hololive’s most subscribed talent with over 4 million YouTube subscribers, Gura’s content output had slowed considerably since 2022, leading many fans to think this departure was on the horizon.
Gura joined Hololive English in September 2020 as part of its first generation, “Myth,” and quickly skyrocketed in popularity. Her energetic personality, musical talents, and meme-worthy catchphrases turned her into one of VTubing’s most recognizable figures. Before joining Hololive, she had already built a following as an independent creator Senzawa.
This graduation marks another big departure for Cover Corporation, Hololive’s parent company. Several talents have left the agency in recent years, some also citing creative differences or management issues. This trend has raised questions about possible tensions between talent desires and corporate direction.
Industry insiders point to Hololive’s increasing focus on idol-like activities as a potential source of friction. While the company began with a heavy idol influence from Japanese culture, many of its Western talents joined with different expectations about creative freedom.
Fans have mixed feelings about the news, with big creators like Asmondgold chiming in.
Asmongold reacts to the Britt and Erobb leak
— yeet (@Awk20000) April 16, 2025
“I like Britt..very nice girl..if you are unsure about the moon landing, your decision making facilities are atleast partially compromised..that being said, I would not write this off as a leak” pic.twitter.com/UiAT8Sx5SL
Some see it as Gura finally breaking free from restrictive policies, while others worry about losing access to the character they’ve followed for years.
“She was more or less done in 2022; at this point, they would just be holding her hostage,” one fan commented.
What’s still unclear is whether Gura’s performer will keep creating content under a new identity or step away from content creation entirely. In VTuber culture, “graduation” can mean anything from rebranding under a new agency to completely retiring from the virtual space.
